I think you have to take into account that in Timeline 2 he now has an additional 15 years of life experience. At the time, he thought it was all he could do. Now he knows that if he doesn't work, his wife will die anyway. How old were they when they got married? Less than 25? They seem very young and their father is able to fulfill his threat without hesitating.
Now ML has more experience to use.

What was stopping him from appointing a knight in the past time line for her? Or any of the things he is doing now, what was stopping him? Where is the father in law now? Because unless they show that the father in law is still a credible threat even in this time line it will be hard for the Duke to keep sympathy. It makes him look super weak for trusting that she would die just because her father in law said so last time.
The writer needs to show the father in law pushing back against the ML current attempts to protect his family and become closer to his family. At the start of this we saw how easy it was for the FL to fire those shitty servants. We saw at the after party for the baby's blessing how just simple it was to brush away the ex fiancée and her petty tricks. We saw how the rest of society reacts to them as a couple when they at least behave like a couple in public. Where is the threat? Shouldn't the father in law be trying to do something to them since surely the way they have been behaving runs counter to the command that he not love her? I really hope this story thread gets picked back up
