I think both of them are right, just too extreme in their views. A person can't always care about what other people are saying, there would be no end to it, especially in a position of power. At the same time, being considerate to your employees (i.e. smiling) should not be a bad thing, they are providing a service to you but they are still people. To find a compromise between their beliefs would not be a bad thing.
