my guess is that its a mental thing
like his friend said those guys were all trash before he even attempts to kiss them, but when he kisses them he starts to realize how shitty they are
i think he feels so bad about getting caught kissing him that hes just mind clouded with guilt into thinking he doesnt deserve true happiness

The way they painted it on the first chapter's more of like a little curse which is like everything goes downhill right after the kiss which doesn't seem related to something psychological
