I actually didn't feel for or care about the characters much, they weren't uninteresting, but they didn't take a hold of me either. The same goes for the actual story, although its down to earth setting did appeal to me. However, one thing that stood out to me that I appreciated, was actually the sex scenes. Now, I never read anything for the sex scenes alone, but these were pretty realistic and basically jumped way past all the yaoi clichés - very, very refreshing.
