The former queen raped him when he was 15 because if she had his child she would become queen. And that plan worked. After she raped him she DID get pregnant, with Blanche. Imagine getting raped, forced to marry the said rapist, then take care of the child that came from your traumatic experience. Of course, he does love Blanche but he doesn't really know how to take care of her and show his affection.
