This situation is parallel IRL. All they could really do is advice, persuade, and do those things I've mentioned above. But it still won't stop people from killing those cuties. We take from nature but only a few of us give back what is due.
Bottomline is- we have to respect the things and the lives we take. We must always do our best, even if we never manage to give back in full. It is a futile endeavour as well as it is bittersweet, and painful.
Hmm. Since magic exists in their world, shouldn't they just fund research for contraceptive devices? Or neuter some of the cuties since the only problem is their rate of reproduction? It should be easier with the use of magic combined with empirical data.
