Okay I’ve read to chapter 9

As a novel reader, here’s my honest opinion. This is so shit. I get that they didn’t want to bore the readers and go round about but they skipped and changed so many details that make the series great. Especially when they changed it for the sake of fan service. First of all, the characterization of the mc. The artsyle is good but definitely does not fit the vibe of the novel. The mc looks like a pubescent teenager, a “kirito”, when originally, he’s supposed to be a tall, not quite buff, but mid 20s guy. If it’s a difference in preference or limitation in artsyle, okay i get that, but this pissed me off the most. They placed too much emphasis on Sooha. Because she’s a girl. As a potential love interest. For duck’s sake, she dies after like 5 chapters, the mc was never ever romantically interested. To begin with, the one who turned back to the waiting room was never even her! It was the old guy! They skipped all over the bonding and training, i can get, but they changed the whole point. Those three characters was the starting line, yes the mc felt a bond after the time together, but he was someone who is selfish. He was supposed to get over it pretty quickly, especially since he faces death against the arrows over and over again. He didn’t really though of them as he got over obstacles, IT WAS ALL FOR HIMSELF, for his own growth and survival. THAT was the whole point. He’s NOT supposed to be a shonen mc for god’s sake. He’s also supposed to be much more calculative and cautious, albeit displaying a gambling mentality sometimes. Throughout the whole training with the 3, he evaluates them and himself a lot. When he went into the 1st floor, he was so cautious, he maintained a tensed protective stance as he walked at turtles pace for a long time. He was not some reckless teenager just walking right into the trap when he knows it’s there. Also, something i deeply regret is when he was at death’s door due to the arrows, the whole very detailed description of his struggle, thoughts, and emotions are what made it phenomenal. But there was none here. I scrolled over the whole 1st floor in effing 5 minutes. It’s also supposed to display his gambler and adventurous side when he decided to just sprint over the final trap where he also almost died, but there’s none of that here either. He got over the boss room not because of some stupid nakama belief but because he was dying, his survival instincts kicked in, and he got into a zone which he then acquired a skill, okay none of that here either. They depicted him to be a way better person than he was meant to be. Here is a shonen mc with a bright look with a tinge of innocence, naivety, recklessness, and plenty of nakama powers. There is a loser, selfish, and arrogant adult with some smarts and gambler mentality within, who btw exhibits has a sense of dark humor too. I don’t have to tell you which one i would pick for the original mc. I honestly thinks that they did a shitty job of adapting this. If i have to say, this is the shonen version, the ‘fairy tail’ version. Not that there’s anything wrong with works like this but since it’s supposed to be faithful to the original work, this ain't it. How are they supposed to go through his later mentality changes and anthropomorphism problem in the later stages as he deals with not only the consequences of his powers, the pressure of his survival and floors, his social relationships on the breaking point, and his dissipating humanity? When the webtoon couldnt even get his initial characterization right? I’m sorely disappointed, and no one cares i know, but i get the right to say what i think. I have a lot of respect and love for this series, especially in the beginning(debatable for the later stages) that’s why I’m especially harsh towards this adaptation. Really, I’m not seeing anything that i love in the novel displayed in the webtoon. Except for the same name, this might as well be a different work. That might’ve worked out better, and I could’ve continued on with a piece of mind.

Oh wow. This is so detailed! Sounds amazing but is there romance in this? Cause romance always kills the action

Yes there is romance. Though I don’t absolutely agree that romance kills action, unfortunately it does happen often so i can see your worries but if it goes by the novel, the romance isn’t really big. There’s only one girl he has a long term relationship with but because of the nature of the tutorial, she isn’t really focused on much even when she’s a major character. Again, this story is all about the mc and his growth.

I don’t think romance kills action I think it’s jus they don’t know how to write good female leads I’ve only read a couple action books where they actually write good female characters (〜 ̄△ ̄)〜

When I first saw this was adapted into a manhwa I was so excited but then I read it. The art is nice but after reading the actually light novel I was seriously disappointed, both character design and their ENTIRE personalities changed. Especially the protag. I would reccomend the light novel to people but not this manhwa.

they had a really good opportunity to take a different route than the typical shounen male protagonist. I wanted to see the desperation and fear in the mc’s eyes through the first few chapters

I agree! You basically neatly summarized my feelings about this. I too prefer the light novel over the manhwa
