The Empress's soul is tied to the Emperor, namely cause they're Dragon and Phoenix. They're soulmates so they can't be separated. When the Empress wants to stay away from the Emperor, she will die. She will literally withers away and vice versa but that's impossible cause the Emperor loves the Empress deeply(yeah it doesn't show cause he's mostly a jerk who expect her to always love him yeah he's a jerk I get it no need to repeat it). There's a better complete spoiler around here somewhere where they can explain better the whats and whys. Oh and yes the Emperor is totally the ML too bad for y'all who wished for others.
