he did love river but bcz his he was promised to get his first lover back he tried not to fall for river... but yeah he couldnt help but fall for river. since he tries to be loyal lover so he choose his first lover lover river. i think he still loves river but bcz he started to reflect on his actions he is trying to let go of river... thats the impression i got from reading that is
