I was confused by that sentence but i think it was an interupted sentence that was supposed to be "my one true love is Ruby" or something, like he was talking to his deadwife about her.
And grief is weird, especially since his wife was his best friend, imo best friend are just as hard to lose as close family members or spouses
ML to FL : My dead wife was just a dear friend, I couldn't forget you even while I married her.
ML to his dead wife: My one true love, *sees her in FL and hid daughter like a love sick guy*
