Multiple layers of unprocessed trauma perhaps? My grandma started talking more and more about what the horrors of WW2 did to her family as her dementia worsened, she lost her brother but never got to truly process that because everyone had to be strong and carry on, so it haunted her really badly in her old age. So I'd say this is pretty realistic :')

That's not necessarily true. Something extremely traumatic happened to him at a time he was heavily repressing himself, so of course he'd be fixated on it, especially since he never got help to deal with that trauma and now his old age and the diary exchange are bringing those memories back. And generally speaking, old people who experience this sort of thing literally can't help it. Him being emotionally clumsy and having been a pretty bad person is another thing.
But at any rate, you can love the people in your life dearly and still be unable to move on from the past. It doesn't mean you love them less.
It's honestly just really unfortunate.
