Its due to the influence and media surrounding bl, and its not just korean bl that has this, japan also has a lot of tops with toxic sexual abuse and dubcon. i think it really just lies in the genre itself and the history of countless stories that includes toxicity, that it has become normalized and I am not surprised some readers eat it up and enjoy it (despite, imo, the story being complete trash, with art and attractive characters being its only defining feature), for me however before reading bl i look at the comments and topics to spot any red flags like SA and dub con to save myself the stress and anguish. Green flag tops all the way, and good plot that actually makes sense and not just porn or heavily sexualized men!!
This is something I’ve been thinking for a while. Recently, I’m starting to lose interest in Korean BL manhwas due to an increasing trend of toxic, rap*its male leads. Especially new ones. Of course there are so many green flag MLs but what’s up with all the red flags? If you’re gonna make a shitty character, at least give them some depth to why they are the way they are? Or a character development? Is this like a reflection on Korean men and based on authors’ experiences or what.
