i'm kind of annoyed that there a lot of people in the yuri on ice fandom who don't think that it relates to yaoi/shounen-ai - like, they think that it's got a gay relationship, but that it doesn't fit within the narrow confines of what they perceive yaoi to be (read: bad and super problematic).
i would argue that yaoi isn't as rigid a genre as they believe and isn't always as problematic as people think (it is...but also it isn't). honestly idk why it can't be classified as shounen-ai (is it too much to hope for yaoi??? probably lol).

also that sometimes what people perceive to be problematic is problematic in regards to western norms, as opposed to what is acceptable in japan.....

That also annoys me so much??? Kissanime even has it just as a "Sports" anime, but after the kiss, this anime should definitely already be labeled as "shounen-ai" (actual yaoi would apply if they ever get to have sex on-screen which I highly doubt)(that would be great tho HAHAHA)
I think it's not being labeled in order to sort of...'broaden the audience'? It's becoming a really popular anime, so probably the people handling its publicity just want it to become MORE popular. Obviously, if you hear a lot about an anime, it might spike your interest to watch it, so I think they don't add the "shounen-ai" tag in order to not scare away potential viewers....
Well, but that's just what I think lol

Because it's a sports anime. It's a sports anime with a canon gay couple. As someone said online "Please please please, I don’t want to alienate LGBT representation in anime any further than it already has by placing YOI in the yaoi category just because of Victuuri. Rarely do we see gay representation outside of yaoi (if you even consider that representative…) so I want to keep this intact."

I agree, since it would be REALLY cool if gay relationships were completely normalized...you know, having the next big shounen hit like One Punch Man or Boku no Hero Academia having a canonic gay protagonist, but it still be all about the action and fighting? I dream of that lol
The only thing I don't like is that if all relationships are just relationships that don't require labels....HOW WILL I FIND ANY GOOD STUFF UNDER THE SHOUNEN-AI TAG ANYMORE...??? It's my favorite genre, after all, and if it's all mixed together with the hetero stuff it will be a bore to find.

Labels really should just exist for the sake of convenience, you know.

    Japanlover November 27, 2016 4:59 am

There is an actual reason why it's not labeled either I'm sorry if I can't remember the reason, but I looked it up and it said why it isnt

I agree it is a sports anime because that is the main focus of it and the creators tag it as so. It is like saying Naruto or bleach should have a romance tag on it because hinata and Naruto end up together or Ichigo and orihime as well.

Yes, agreed! And I think it would be a disservice to the creators if people only look at their series because of the romantic value, not because of their main focus.

I get what you mean, lol. It does make looking up new series kinda difficult if the genre you want isnt right out stated.

see, i think it's possible to have the kind of a -main- tag and secondary tags - because series such as naruto and bleach do have romance, so why not tag it as such? it would misrepresent the series and nor would tagging yoi with a secondary tag of 'shounen-ai' misrepresent the anime.
