I am not grateful for this bad translation

barbaroga November 8, 2023 4:53 pm

This is a perfect example how a bad translation and cleaning can ruin a good story. And I don’t care this is ‘a free site and I should be grateful for someone translating it’. It ruined the story for me, it was so painful to read. I feel sorry for the translators probably investing a lot of time in a bad translation - personally I don't see a point. If you don't know how to do it properly, then don't do it at all. Both author and readers don’t deserve this.

this ^^^ and the translator had the nerve to leave a passive aggressive comment telling us to wait for the officials if we think their translation job is shitty… atp id rather have waited way longer to read an at least DECENT translation instead of this mess
there’s a difference between broken english/needing a proofreader and completely unintelligible english that was clearly thrown into google translate and slapped onto some blurry screenshots of the raws

I agree. Im tired of 13yos ruining this platform with some social justice bullshit like ‘somebody dedicated their time for translations, be grateful to even have the opportunity to read this manga bla bla’. Im in my 30s and I just want to read my illegal manga in peace. This site was better when people could not comment :) Btw I like Leon Kennedy too

Yes, I agree with you 100%. I don't care that people read on this site illegally, you all still need to read a decent translation, even if it's only for the sake of the series or the author's reputation, so you all can recognize how good a series is & whether you want to support it when it becomes licensed. The way I see it, you all are potential supporters who may actually buy the official chapters. Or, if the licensing never comes to fruition, then at least you remember the creator who did a good job, & hopefully you all can support them when they come up with a new serialization. I am sick & tired of some people being so defensive of straight MTL groups who don't even respect the series enough to at least correct obvious translation mistakes & make the sentences coherent/grammatically correct. Don't encourage these people by saying thank you or give them appreciation for efforts, because they don't deserve it. Such things will only fuel them to keep on going because those are exactly the things they are seeking. People need to be aware that what straight MTL is doing is ruining the series. I have seen people giving very low ratings or complaining about the author having bad writing skills or the story is confusing & so on, & that just makes me mad as hell. So my point is, if someone decides to translate a series, they have the responsibility to do everything in their power to give the series justice. If they don't have the skills to be a translator, then recruit one, or join an existing group to work with one. After all, the point of scanlation is to introduce a series & the creator.

Translators don’t owe you anything, they aren’t being paid and you can’t assume they “respect” something just because they only translate things people want to see, also this series wasn’t translated by a team. It was done by two individual people at different times.

You are mad at the facts, these people trabsalte for fun they are not being paid to be obliged to do an accurate translation and if you don’t like it you can go and translate yourself or look for a different site.

You know what, I did. I was a scanlator up until a couple months ago because I am now busy & don't have as much time. I have done 200+ chapters over the 3+ years of my service. So I think I pretty much got the idea of scanlation hammered into my head in all those times. I got mad at their translation for Cheongsang Buma, so much so that against my own good judgment, I did all the work by myself to release a chapter just to let people understand what it is about. My work is by all means imperfect & probably has mistakes too, but at least it is understandable. Go ahead & take a look yourself at what they did to that series. That is nothing short of butchering a very good series with a good plot & beautiful art. Don't you feel pity for the series & the author when people start trashing it by saying the plot is incomprehensible? It is the translator's responsibility to do their utmost to give a series justice. And like I said, if they don't have a translator, they can join a scanlation team or build a new one with a proper translator. What they are doing is just not right.

You just prooved my whole point with your comment. I dont care they do this for free. Just because its free it cant be good? I dont understand that logic. And it ruins the manga cuz there are a lot of people who then blame the author for the bad story, when inf fact, the translation is bad (not always ofc, but often enough). The concequences in these cases are high, its not just a matter of a bad translation - the authors reputation is at stake. Some people just dont understand that.

obviously translators aren’t ”obliged” to work on anything, but in the same sense we aren’t obliged to treat this buttfuck scanlation job as an act of service, because it isn’t. stop acting like we’re disrespecting the translators and discrediting their hard work. it isn’t hard work. i literally took screenshots of the raws and fed them into the google translate camera and got a better grasp of the story than i ever did reading it here. and believe me, i’ve worked in multiple scanlation teams, and not once did i work on chapters and think i’m only “doing it for fun”. we do it because we want more people across other language barriers to be able to enjoy an author’s work, out of respect for them and their stories. that’s why your comment here is ridiculous and shallow; translators don’t owe readers anything, they owe the AUTHORS an at least decent retranslation that conveys their story to readers who cant read the original language. that clearly wasn’t done here, and even worse, the translator is aware that we all think their uploads are shitty and doing the manhwa an injustice (yet continued to upload chapters anyways). all translators should know as a base rule that if they can’t properly do their job, they should leave it to someone else. don’t try to argue with me about this, you’re wrong and it’s embarrassing.

Again, I agree with this wholeheartedly. I worked in scanlation with the mentality that I willingly do the work to share & introduce the series & creator. Never once did I think the readers owed me gratitude or likes or appreciation or monetary compensation. If anything, I owed the series & the author the best of my efforts. So anyway, just in case I may have been too harsh on this Calix person, & perhaps, they may have improved somewhat without me knowing, I went & checked their latest release here today for The Millennial Tiger. Nope, still bad, & worse, they now dropped it with this excuse: "The story & text is weird that doesn't make sense even for me & for the person who is fluent with Korean". Oh, really? Now they're blaming it on the author for the texts not making sense, & backing that claim up with "a person fluent in Korean"? If by "a person fluent in Korean" they mean the AI behind the translation apps that's doing the translation for them, then I guess that is true. AI is sort of dumb & slow when learning human natural language. After all, we all know they don't have access to anyone fluent in Korean, otherwise they'd be doing a much better job at translating. Like, please, can't they just be honest for once & say that the series is way too hard for them instead of blaming the texts not making sense. Like, come on!
