Let’s stop acting like the “ex” did him a favor. Dude is mad bitter because the last time Dan saw him, he was being dragged out. “Ex” would still be involved with the dude if he was wanted in the sliiightest way. But he’s not. So, he set out to humiliate Dan. But we all know how the book will end. Self awakening, confessions of love and the ex that “ate” will still be bitter and ran through.
