Tom may have threatened them with homelessness or something? He seemed to be an influential person when he was alive and his wife would've been trapped. Sadly, not all women in that kind of situation can get out.

it would have been great tragedy for both poor FL and her mother. I 'm wondering though why they were not able to escape this nasty domestic abuse. It wasn't the 19th century. There were still so many people who could help them .
