Depends on the circumstances I guess? If they had been around the child for most of their childhood, like in this he met the kid when he was 8, and if he hadn't moved to America, if he'd been a part of the kids life I'd feel it was more grooming (even if unintentional) and I wouldn't be okay with it. The kid was away for 10 years, he came to an understanding of his feelings on his own and it was only after tatsumi sent that book when he was nearly an adult that he knew tatsumi felt the same way.
