Rumor says Ash had to die because an editorial didn't want a canon gay couple. Just makes you think if this was made more recently maybe Ash didn't have to die... idk made me sad to think about

Ah I believe thats not true like it can be a reason but its NOT the only reason
Author in an interview said that Ash had committed many crimes and was very cold and indifferent towards people he didn't care about which made him commit a LOT of murders (Considering his past and all its understandable, but Ig for author its not?) so they said Ash had to reap what he sow thats why they decided that ending. Also Author didn't wanna convey the message that your crimes can be ignored just becuase you did one good thing idk if that makes sense

Yeah I knew about this plus I read some of the authors other works and she just makes depressing stories in general. Nonetheless my point still stands even with that reasoning, it's possible in more accepting times that ash could've been forgiven for his crimes and allowed life. It's just an empty thought tho

actually that is a really common thing but i believe for banana fish it wasn't intentional

It was such a tragedy what happened to River Phoenix. I remember Johnny Depp said he felt guilty about what happened even though he only owned the Viper Room. Both deaths though were kinda inevitable. Not saying River deserved to die, but drug addiction is awful and it’s a miracle if you don’t end up as the common statistic. For Ash, he was too deep in the the violent underworld. I think Yoshida probably wanted to give Ash a happy ending but, when she heard about River it probably really felt like, “no matter how much you change, sometimes you can’t escape fate” and thus Ash too succumbed to his fate. It makes me really sad and angry too but goddamn, it’s amazing writing and part of what cements this story in my heart

If this is the real reason, I'm super pissed at Yoshida-sensei ( ̄へ ̄)

Ik Ash's design is based off River Phoenix but that doesn't mean author 'felt' like killing him cause River died. lmao no! Ash was a criminal. Author talked that she felt it would be wrong to let Ash live as he has done so many crimes. Part of the reason can be that world was not that open to LGBT community, thats why the manga ended like that.
