    Well, shounen-ai is basically shoujo with the main couple being guys. So everybody knew that. It was a matter of how.

    no. Here is the term from wiki. The Japanese words "shōnen" and "ai" individually mean "boy" and "love," which is exactly what shōnen-ai means, boy-love. It refers to anime and manga that focus on love and romance (as opposed to sex) between boys or men. Spoiler below. Don't read if you don't want to know.

    In terms of simple plot, that is falling in love and the trials that follow, and most mangaka's art styles, it is shoujo. I mean, put a girly uke in there and shounen ai is basically indistinguishable from shoujo.
