I’ve read most of the novel and he’s not impotent. He was unable to perform on his wedding night because Ethel is more like a sister to him and he thought it was sinful. As someone else pointed out, he has feelings for his actual sister. Ethel was a substitute for Liene even though he tries to deny it.

Technically correct. Liena has an ability to use her presence to manipulate a person’s emotions such as love, loyalty, etc. However, all her victims have different reactions when her ability is removed by Ethel. Some care for her in a less extreme manner, some despise her for clouding their judgement, some are conflicted and disappointed.
Ethel was supposed to be their sister, but Liena used her ability to persuade the orphanage director. Her presence is strong.
