My brother has sleep paralysis. He had his first one a couple days ago and it was terrifying. I woke up in the middle of the night hearing him screaming... It has been about 6 days since he last had it and I can't sleep. I know it should be him not being able to sleep but idk i just can't sleep from the paranoia He said it was a doll smiling at him eyes wide open and that's all i imagine every time i close my eyes and all i feel is something like that watching me
Anyone know a good way to over come this paranoia? School started up the day he had it and i haven't gotten decent sleep since then

i had it many times before, usually when i sleep on my back, when i'm stressed out, and when i force myself to sleep. I was aware of everything around me, i could even hear my breath, but i couldn't move or speak at all. One thing i do to prevent that is to sleep one my right side, and make sure i am completely comfortable when i go to sleep. hope this idea helps

Sleep paralysis is indeed scary. I started having them years ago. Luckily, I learned early on how to deal with it. What AnonXD said is pretty accurate. The things I do are:

First, don't sleep with your door firmly close. There's no circulating air so it makes it easier for you to hallucinate. Especially if you have the heat on.

Second, while you're trying to sleep, if you ever start to feel like you're falling, get up immediately. Sit up, watch TV, read a book, take a walk around the house. Until the feeling of dread or fear goes away.

Third, if you do end up in paralysis, NEVER OPEN YOUR EYES. You only hallucinate if you open your eyes. Keep them close and start trying to wiggle your fingers/toes and moving your limbs. Try to lift your head. Anything to wake yourself up. Keep struggling until you really get up.

Fourth, DO NOT GO BACK TO SLEEP WHEN YOU GET UP. You'll only fall into paralysis again. Do something else, get it off your mind.

Fifth, don't think about sleep paralysis. That's how it usually starts. You think about it and then you start to fear it. And then you have it that night because you're thinking about it as you fall sleep.

I also have experienced sleep paralysis..and for me the problem usually is I can't get "out" of my dream (also can't move)...It felt like i'm in a dream inside of another dream. It's terrifying

Okay. This may sound stupid but if you believe in it it will work. If you had a special stuffed animal while growing up as soon as you start thinking about a scsry doll imagine your childhood fuzzy buddy coming over and beating that doll up until it runs away. If you didn't have one or just imagining it isn't enough, go out and carefully search until you find one that really resonates with you. Then believe that you will be protected. These things are in the mind and that's where you must fight them. I sleep on my side and when I have woken up from one of my frequent nightmares I roll over because I believe there are different dreams on the other side of the bed. And bacause I believe it, it's true. Rarely it's another bad dream but then I just roll back over because the dreams on the original side of the bed have been changed out. So if you can convince yourself that you are protected from the doll you will be. I hope it works out.

I also started to have sleep paralysis recently. It is indeed scary. It's not only being unable to move but u also hallucinate scary things. So how did I deal with this?
    - Open the windows, let the air circulate. I stop having frequent sp after i did this
    - When u know you are having sp, just tell yourself: "Ah, I'm just having sleep paralysis again, nothing to be scared about"
    - After that, u can try to get yourself out of this by twitching your fingers, toes, or move your face muscles (i hope u know what i mean :)))

I believe that it's because u keep thinking of this and get anxious that it happens to u. But I know it's hard to pretend u forget it.

So I hope my advice can help your bro get out of sp. Once u know how to do so, you are not afraid anymore and it happens to u less and less! And not anymore!

Stay strong ok, u and your bro can overcome this! Keep me updated ლ(´ڡ`ლ)

Or do something that get your mind off sleep paralysis. Do something to make you feel tired. For me, I start exercising about 1 hour everyday, and studying at night so my body and mind would so tired that i can't think of anything else other than sleep. I don't take a nap during the day either. Hope this helps. Sorry I can't offer anymore suggestions, this is limited to my experience only.

I'm glad you recognized the feeling even though you've never felt it before. As AnonXD said, just relax. Read a book before you sleep. If you go to sleep paranoid about having SP, you really will have SP. So, do a relaxing activity before you sleep. If you're worried about your mind wandering before you actually fall asleep, listen to some music with lyrics. Follow the lyrics along in your head. Or set the TV on a timer and listen to that.

I know practically nothing about sleep paralysis but I do know a lot about anxiety. My advice was just about how you could get over your anxiety and get to sleep. I really hope things improve for you and your brother.
