For a closeted man with internal homophobia, accepting and being true to yourself is a huge development. The way that he began to fearlessly declare his love for Asami and saw a future with him says a lot.
I think people here want to see him "suffer" without realizing that all those years of him hiding himself and depriving himself of real love (which hurt Asami in the process) was already him "suffering".
