That’s actually how I would’ve written it if I was the author a throuple. Ian eventually leaves as planned, leaving both TJ and Jo. Then TJ and Jo end up in a life and death situation for weeks because situations such as those create a bond between people. Then Ian comes back and both TJ and Jo realize that they aren’t just jealous of each other, but that they’re also jealous of Ian being with either one of them. Ha!
