Basically it’s like gate/dungeon/hunter stories were “awaken” have super powers and they go into gates to fight monsters.
But the hunters are called Espers instead. Espers also have a chance of going feral or out of control so they have Guides. The Guides help regulate the Espers emotions and wellbeing, which keeps Espers from going crazy.
