From all I can see, Poseidon clearly treasures Athena but he chose not to be with her to make her life less miserable. That backfires. Somehow Athena will understand Poseidon more when she make friends with his most vulnerable part (the human), and he will also be more honest with his feelings when he forget about all the god war and destiny thing.
