I’m hoping it’s his anxiety/shock stemming from hearing the childhood friend call him average festering over his thoughts and interpretations of things happening… since when directly being interacted with (and also when speech bubbles are white instead of black) most characters are being decent to him… hmmm!
So from my understanding the people shit talking naho is in his head/his anxiety talking to him and not actually happening?
For example his two new friends who seemed to be talking badly about him but when he chatted with them seemed completely kind and to like him?
