The former. I'm pretty sure I saw someone say that Kana's friends actually and genuinely do like Naho. It's just that Naho's insecurities kind of like blinded him from seeing that

surprise surprise, the jerk friend suddenly seems nice rather than hostile, gee that came out of the blue. Was it Naho's narrative that made others look meaner when in actuality we're just looking through Naho's insecure perspective or this is just horrible writing?
