You two misunderstood, it's because he failed to live up to his previous boss/friend's expectations, so this time he didn't wanted to let anyone down.

Also the fact that the boss knew clearly what he needed so much "recognition" and kept giving him signs that he trusted him and shit totally manipulated him (￣∇￣")
