I feel like he targets males cuz he couldn't do it to his first love. So he uses others as substitute.
I thought that dan was originally a psychopath since childhood and he only imitates the emotions of others or his first love actually taught him how to love children and pottery.

Everytime he mentions his first love, he refers to them as "that person". And he hinted about it sometimes that his first love could be a guy, his friend. During leviathan chapter he said that there were fewer girls than boys so some partners are both males. "So me and my first love..." He said after that.idk if him targeting only males is related. （￣へ￣）
I suggest you reread everything from start and observe his rants abt his highschool sweetheart. And you'll realize what i mean.
