I think he was just surprised at the thought of one of them dying since pluton has been with them for a while and he got used to him so the thought of him killing kayden or vice versa was just a shock
He knew but he never really thought it was a fight to death. Hes been in so many duels but none of them are actually like fight to death and afterwards, most of them became his friends. Duel in Jiwoo's head is just a way to showcase how much hes gotten stronger and to learn.
i feel like recently the conversations sound less mature (?) like about pluton going after kayden, i think jiwoo's learned enough about the awakener world and kayden's status that he shouldn't be so shocket atp?? he's literally been in so many life-threatening scenarios
