That background at the 1st chapter is probably him and the landlord, so that's why that apartments price was so low. Since mc lost his memories, and the landlord knows him (he's probably some kind of wolf or smth) he can smell mc and knows he's that special someone from the past (look at that vampire like mark on mc's neck) and that's prob the reason why the price of the apartment is low.
