She should just told the truth though..since he is a minor+it was more or less a self defense. He should be off scott free..maybe he will be sent to an institution for counseling (because it was a traumatic experience for a child)..but if he is deemed okay, he can be send back to his mom soon. She may worried that it will effect his future record + mental health (being a murderer) but I bet that it is 100% better for him than being label as a murderer's son+ without his mother beside him.
At least if she told him the truth, he can still justified himself as someone who protects his mom.
So it's true..at the end of the day..she's just a runaway mom. I understand her situation and I know she just want the best for her son..but she should at least think about what will happen to him without his mom.
Sorry for rambling..I just see so many situations where the parents "sacrificed" themselves with the pretense that it is for the good of their child but never really consider what will really happen to them on the long run/whether it is really the best option for their child.
