a rumor could go from "i saw her on the balcony with a man" to "she was fucking a man on the balcony" in the same evening
Sure, some of the rumors originated from the lady herself... well, to make a makeshift "fence", for better or worse.
Some spread by a man suffering from inferiority complex
But, what about other rumors?? Did the other noble ladies take part in it or they simply stood as bystander/spectator??
