Either I'm misunderstanding, or Olivia is making a wild assumption about the source of Laritte's scars. "There's no way an illegitimate child would be treated well as a duchess." And she would be treated well as the illegitimate daughter of a count with her step family? Like???? I know it's written for needless drama because this story lost its main plot point but got damn.
In my mind the story ended after the empress was arrested, because everything else after has been...pointless.
