I have a theory that Gun helps his rivals grow stronger and takes in so called 'successors' not because he's looking for fun but because he WANTS to be defeated. He can't betray the chairman because apparently they shared a cup of tea or something but the chairman has become too evil and the only way Gun can stop helping the chairman is to be defeated by someone.
Gun is called the nurturing genius(one of the ten) so it's definitely on purpose. Honestly it would be a good explanation on why Gun is so loyal to Charles after everything.
