The invitation was for the mom. The brother gave it to her and Carnie (red head) went without consulting the mom first. She didn't come in place of her mom. That was a lie she told FL, but FL saw past the lie (and the mom coming later confirmed it).
Yes, she was sitting silently at the table, but silence can speak volumes. She did it to antagonize. Everyone else is talking and trying to get along, yet Carnie is sitting there "silently", with the stankiest of stank faces. Everybody knew what she was trying to do. If she was gonna just sit there "silently", then she shouldn't have gone in the first place....but we all know her brother talked her into it. Not only is she jealous of FL, but she's also letting that jealousy control her to the point where she's making bad decisions.
I understood why the mom didn't want to hear her out. She shouldn't have gone in the first place. And if she wanted to, she shouldn't have listened to her brother. She should've taken the invitation to her mother and gotten permission to go. The mom didn't wanna listen to any excuses bc she shouldn't have gone anyway. Especially since she was "grounded" during the time, I think. If not, then she was definitely grounded after pulling this stunt. Carnie is not mature enough to be in society on her own if she let something like another woman marrying ML get to her. They had a second wedding and that vow can't be broken so, why keep going after her. Especially seeing how the FL is now a Duchess.
House Vilium (red heads) may hold prestige and have a long history of Dukedom, but House Gartt (FL and ML) now has power. And ML is a war hero more times over. This world is all about networking, socializing, but also staying on top. Carnie didn't have to like the FL, but she could've done the whole "keep friends close but enemies closer" to make some sort of friendship connection with FL and House Gartt. But she chose to be immature and created a war where there shouldn't have been one.
I honestly don’t even think what the red head girl said was that bad I get what mom is trying to do but locking her away/ sending her away for weeks obviously isn’t working. Especially just for fl cuz u made promises to fl like listen to ur daughter a bit more, mom didn’t even wanna hear the story about how she got the invite. Also she basically said I came in place in of my mother cuz she wasn’t feeling up to it oki, red head girl wasn’t causing no trouble, wasn’t even speaking till fl pointed her out then she said one syllable and everyone else decided they needed to talk over her. And fl really sent someone to snitch to her mama
