I don’t think he’s meant to be ugly! There are multiple examples of men and women hitting on him throughout the story. I think he’s supposed to be pretty or cute but I guess no one compares to the ML!
I actually think it’s supposed to be an example of how he’s an unreliable narrator! His perception of his physical appearance has been shaped by his experience with racism in the States and the fact that he grew up physically frail so not only was he Asian, but he was scrawny too. That’s why he acts like Mike Yagoobian in that scene where everyone is super nice to him but he’s like “everyone hates me”. It’s also why I’m sure that he’s pretty crazy too bc he keeps rationalizing his batshit insane actions so we let it slide.

The author gives all his heart in drawing the ml,but he draw the mc poorly
