I'm gonna share the author's sentiment about the story because it says a lot about the plot and the dynamics of the two.
"the main theme of 'Profundis' is love and hate. I wanted to write a story in which the characters who had already lived a miserable life meet each other and proceed to ruin their lives even more, hurt each other, hate each other terribly, but still, I wanted to write a love story nonetheless. Love and hate are contradictory emotions. But I think it's also possible that loave and hate can exist at the same time."

Narration: They might sometimes lash out at the other in a fit of rage, scratching, biting, glaring at each other with killing intent in their eyes. Nonetheless, they were in love. Shinjae feelings about Yugeon "His love was fulfilled only by dragging Yugeon down to the depths of his own, and eventually dying at Yugeon's hands. Yugeon was his sin, his virtue, and it was a love-hate fate that finally came to him. It would be the end of dystopia"
