I agree with you. But I also believe that someone else summed it up best when they said the biggest issue is pacing. For over 1.5 years this story has grinded to a halt and even hurt the main or first part of the story with the flashback. Now going back and rereading the first part with the new info makes it seem much worse.

I personally think that the author made a mistake to put ian's story in the first place, I mean maybe people won't really mad about the flashback if she/he put Bryan's story first and then Ian's story later so reader can accept the continuatiom between the past and the future. Well this is just my humble opinion tho
