A dynamic like in Okane ga nai (in this case it's even worse) is just sad and can only be saved by this "lack of comprehensible emotional follow up" trope. Just because Kyon is not as strong as Karis doesn't mean his character is bad writing....some people really need to get that and stop pushing their own thoughts onto the characters.
