As a doctor - it's anorexia if he has a low BMI (low weight), bulimia nervosa if he has a normal BMI. Both disorders have poor body image, and can have binging with purging. The key distinguishing factor is the BMI.

And to summarize, he had bulimia when he was obese (for high or normal BMI) and now with anorexia that he's thin (for low BMI)

I took an abnormal psych class, so I knew this, but before then I thought like most others here, that bulimia basically meant purging. I think the DSM might have changed things recently though to the criteria you mentioned, which may be the cause of the widespread confusion? Growing up, in health classes and media we were told bulimia means purging.

Sorry. I said purging but I meant bingeing.

The DSM-4 and 5 both have the same criteria for anorexia with the DSM 4 being from 1994 - I understand the confusion though - what you need to learn for class is probably more general and focuses on the most common signs of both, which is what the public sees. However, the nuances exist within medicine because these diagnoses affect treatment, which is more necessary for us doctors to know.

I was taught in school (long ago) that bulemia was the binge/purge thing and anorexia was just not eating.

Thanks to everyone for the clarification

    Hello dear , I agree you a lot ^-^
It's sad to see a person who has nervosa anorexia. T^T....
When I see more patients who have different disease, I feel so sad...
Our life is dangerous so we have to be good people in this birth, you can see we can't erase previous karma... Karma always with us without going away so We have to behave ourselves.

Kim Yu Geon never had bulimia when he was overweight. He just ate a lot. He developed anorexia after experiencing an event that caused his aversion to eating.

Ah I see , good to know! Of course I can't do a full history and physical on this fictional character to make a proper diagnosis, just wanted to make the distinction clear in my original comment about anorexia vs bulimia.

Hello Rico!!! <3 Agreed it's definitely sad to see such people with anorexia or medical illnesses, though it definitely makes being in the medical field more worthwhile for us to be able to offer some comfort or help (though also difficult when there are no options).

Yeah..i can relate to u...I am really seccretive about my yaoi fandom in my uni..but one day one of my friend who's also an anime otaku saw a realllyyy intimate pic of two guys in my phone when i was showing her a pic of victor..and i got caught..then i just proudly accepted it...at first she said it's disgusting and all..but u can imagine the power of a fujoshi in a yaoi argument..and i recommended her some of the fluffiest and pure heartbreaking ones..and guess what...she got addicted..(≧∀≦)..Like urs most of my friends are also into koreans.. they say koreans r the prettiest..most handsome..blah..blah..which i feel bland to...But i hope u get a fellow fojushi friend..Gambatte(⌒▽⌒)
