Oh dear oh no Kaya got twisted worse. Girl help. Someone help this boy :0 I'm now more worried the direction his life is going
Y'all stop getting mad at Ran though; she is in no way equipped to handle this situation and is basically trying to survive. If anything, I admire that she wants Kaya to be able to have a proper family and be a normal kid. But currently, he's more like a monster than a person.. Also have you guys heard of a freeze response to scary situations? I think that's part of why Ran doesn't fight back (I myself have experienced where a family member grabbed me in anger once and all I could do was lose the strength in my legs and go silent because I had never been in physical altercation like that. I was really useless and couldn't even cry until like a day or two later when I processed it. So I guess props to Ran for not having a full on panic attack lol)
This kid Kaya is physically intimidating, mentally unpredictable, and she's probably trying not to let their parents get involved because she doesn't want them to negatively view Kaya. The flashbacks of how she was treated in various social situations makes sense why she has a hard time to stand up for herself, but she seems to have difficulty asking others to get involved either.
But anyway side note I like that the mangaka actively has other characters refute Ran's self blame before she can really spiral. She has more support than she used to, but she herself needs to become stronger.
