Ik its been years but doing bad things doesn't equally make you a bad person in psychology, take crime rate about theft for example, 3rd world countries have a higher crime rate especially because of poverty, they do bad things due to certain circumstances. He's mentally gone and needs immediate psychiatric help, however that doesn't absolve him of his wrongdoings though, he's still a criminal in the end.
