I feel like you had to go back decades to make a point seem valid.. If you googled it , as I suspect, you see that that usage was 1970-1980 roughly.. perhaps 50 years ago. By the 1990's the term yaoi was evolving.
Now days, yaoi is love/romance between men that shows more graphic genitalia. Shounen Ai is usually considered the same type of love, but without the graphic genitalia. All are under the umbrella term of BL.
And the problem here is just patience.. yaoi doesn't mean it has to be primarily about showing graphic s*x, it means it will contain it.
