There was this part where James mentioned that he needed the key (a way for him to be fully muse) because he was worried of rusting. Since he wasn't born with a key, thus if in case he do rust, he has nothing to fix it. Straight up dying.
Basically him being fully muse is just him preventing the rusting. Hope this answered why James wanting to be muse.
Ngl the plot wasn't that good, world needed some building and the concept of muses felt unfinished. The art was really good, just think this needed a bit more hashing out. Also, James actually wanting to be a muse confused me 'cos why tf would you want to have a body that dies if you don't wind it up with a key, and you have some "tune" that you yourself can't even hear?? Just be a human with a hole at the back of your neck, man
