Many say "your past does not define your present choices" but in reality, our past defines absolutely ALL our choices, our personality, what we do with our life, our fears, what we love too... Of course, this is no excuse for violence, but it is human to be imprisoned by his past.
JJK was beaten all his childhood, over and over again. So obviously, now that he's in power, he doesn't want to lose anymore, he doesn't want to be weak. Showing a sign of weakness would plunge him back into his traumas and insecurity because he hasn't dealt with his traumas. And when you're afraid, you'd rather crush others than yourself, that's human too.
Of course, that doesn't excuse all his wrongdoings again. But does it explain them? Yes. I'm still on Kim Dan's side; he doesn't deserve anything he's been through, but I understand JJK's behavior better now.
