Extreme abuse and poverty breeds adults who lack empathy and misdirected anger that they will inflict on others (Our Kim Dan). Him and Dan both come from poor backgrounds, but the difference here is the nurture. Dan was nurtured by his grandma and loved, despite his adverse living conditions. Jaekyung was not loved or protected in the same type of environment and has built this hard, angry exterior because of that and is unable to trust/recognize his own emotions. Dan’s living conditions and drinking triggers Jae because it takes him back into the past where he had no means of protection and was vulnerable to his abusive father and was malnourished. Boxing is all he has, thus why he is so desperate to get back into the ring. This is not a justification for abusive behavior as an adult, it’s just the pathology of how our “horse” thinks. Jaekyung really sees a lot of his past self in Kim Dan, that’s why he has a softness towards him, that even others have noticed, despite being an a-hole.
