I definitely agree. This should’ve been hinted at waaaaay earlier. Or they should’ve made some other back story that better suits the whole “jinx” thing, which is now becoming completely irrelevant.
Also, go read that book, girl. A nice high quality one. Just anything with better writing than this lol

This backstory only makes Jaekyung look worse. Or the writing ability of the artist. This should have been hinted at better throughout the story. Instead, it feels forced, it feels like this section was thought of during the recent hiatus.
His "obsession" with winning isn't a big enough indicator of his troubled past. We've had plenty of private scenes with Jaekyung without Dan present, and we were never shown any vulnerability regarding his upbringing. Sure, he has trouble sleeping, but that's a seme trope nowadays.
When he was drinking, he should've resented how he's becoming his father. When he saw how hard Dan was working to survive poverty he should have had a minor flashback that would've prompted him to show an inkling of kindness (while still being an ass about it, of course).
Why not have a scene where Dan finds out Jaekyung donates to organizations that help abused/impoverished children? Why not let us take a journey with Dan as we watch Jaekyung's character develop with a constant back and forth "woah, that seemed out of character for Jaekyung, but maybe it isn't? Is there more to him than just being a dick?"
In my opinion, this is all a little too late. Maybe I should go read a book idk
