I think his jinx may have been after his father's death... he didn't win any more fights, and in the meantime he discovered he was gay and after having his first relationship, which must have been casual, he won a fight and started to relate these events... I also think that JK never fell in love, he only saw sex as a way to overcome bad luck, just to fight and win... Dan is his first love, that's why he's having difficulty recognizing and naming this feeling.
