seems like a type of Stockholm syndrome. He grew up being trapped it's probably somewhat comforting because it's so familiar. The part he couldn't stand was being trapped while everyone who was around him kept him at a distance as well. So basically he's still trapped but he's not lonely. So really he needs some therapy lol
